Did you know that mobility scooters can go as fast as 19 mph? They are electric-powered vehicles that are often used by those who are less mobile. They are also available to hire from all major car rental companies, however, if you do opt to buy one it will need to comply with British Standards.
However, you need to know that the maximum allowed speed limit in the UK is 8 mph – any mobility scooter faster than 8 mph is considered illegal.
A mobility scooter is around 3 feet wide and 5 feet long, so they are very narrow and easy to manoeuvre around tight spaces. It has small rubber wheels so don’t go too fast! They are easy to drive, just like driving a car with an automatic gearbox. However, they can take some getting used to, especially if you have driven cars all your life. Use the steering wheel to control the direction and the acceleration/brake pedals for going forwards and backwards.
The average speed of a mobility scooter is 5 mph, however, as previously said, there are some that go all the way up to 19 mph! The speed can be controlled by a throttle on the handlebars, which you pull towards you to move forward and push away to move backwards. Some even have electric reverse! Be careful not to go too fast, as you could cause an accident or hurt yourself if you suddenly come across a bump or obstacle at speed!
